Title
IX Needs Help!
Title IX of the
Education Act of 1972 has provided girls and women with
equal education opportunities in vocations as well as sports. It is, in
fact, the closest law we have to an ERA. Title IX is under attack by the
Bush administration. The Department of Education has called four hearings,
one of which remains. These hearings also demonstrate how vulnerable our
gains are without the ERA.
It is possible to
send testimony via E-mail and Fax. Following is
information on how to do this. I urge all of you to send a brief message
in
support of Title IX.
ALERT
Hearings on Title IX were held in Atlanta, GA Aug. 27-28, Chicago, IL
Sept. 17-18, and Colorado Springs, CO Oct. 22-23. One more is scheduled
for San Diego, CA Nov. 20-21.
Those who support Title IX see these hearings as a serious attempt to
weaken the law. Alice Cohan of the Feminist Majority reported at an NCWO
meeting IN September, that the speaker panelists at the first two
meetings were heavily tilted in favor of those who are publicly hostile
to Title IX, such as members of the Independent Women's Forum (IWF) that
attacks Title IX on their web site.
Proponents need to speak up. Send your E-mail or Fax testimony to
be read at a hearing to: OpportunityinAthletics@ed.gov,
Fax 202-260-4560.
Remember that Title IX is more than athletics. It provides equal
opportunities for girls and women in vocations. Weakening Title IX in
sports will weaken it in other areas as well.
