Spooktacular!

What: The purpose of the Halloween-themed Science Spooktacular event is to provide a fun-filled experience that will engender
or reinforce girls’ interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) activities.

grade girls and their families were invited.
There
were 290 participants
including girls and family members. Link

The event included more than 50 interactive
science displays provided by NIU STEM Outreach program, staffed by young women
and adults involved in STEM studies or careers. There were 14 exhibitors with information
about after-school and summer science, technology and math programs and
exhibitors representing women in STEM careers with information about those
careers. In addition to the
exhibitors, children enjoyed science activities related light,
sound, air, chemicals, movement, balance, liquids,
and electronic, infrared, digital and computer devices.
Photos of the participants were created with a science
background, bracelets of UV sensitive beads were made, and
the activities facilitators were career role models for
the children.
Jalissa Meredith,
Ms. Black Illinois, attended the event; greeting girls at
registration and joining in the science activities. As a
roving ambassador, she created photo opportunities with
