Illinois Legislative Review
Presented by AAUW Lobbyist Paula Perdue

Location: Elmhurst Public Library

Paula Purdue works for AAUW-IL Inc. as a paid lobbyist, she lobbies on behalf of AAUW to further our public policy agenda.  Many issues once legislated at the national level are now being debated at the state level.  Paula, a seasoned lobbyist, will discuss the last Illinois legislative session and what might be on the horizon in the next session.  She will also discuss how AAUW members can be effective lobbyists

Women of Influence in Chicago
Presented by Chicago Architecture Foundation

Location: Elmhurst Public Library

During Chicago’s explosive growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, women played a hugely influential role. Chicago’s women participated in the Underground Railroad, exhibited the first Modern Art paintings, created the juvenile justice system, and broke up a plot of kill President Lincoln. These are just a few of the stories of remarkable women buried at Graceland Cemetery. You will learn about these women and others through a lively slide presentation featuring period photographs and quotes. Among the women discussed are early settler Mary Jane Richardson Jones, an African-American pioneer is civil rights; social reform leader Louise de Koven Bowen, one of the guiding forces behind Jane Addams’ Hull House; and Marion Mahony Griffin, advocated for art and architecture. The presentation will also illustrate the influence of women on the city’s most significant architecture, including buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and H.H. Richardson.

Book Discussion: “Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming to Age in America”


Location: Elmhurst Public Library

Just Like Us  by Helen Thrope, takes readers deep into the lives of four teenage girls — two legal Mexican immigrants, two illegal immigrants. Even though the four friends have dreams of college and careers, they have to face the harsh reality that two of them will have access to crucial opportunities that are closed to the other two, altering the course of their friendship and their futures.  This book was chosen as the September 2010 book by AAUW’s national book club, !Adelante!.

March is International Women’s Month and our branch interest group, Half the Sky, has arranged for us to hear from a spokes person at the Care Action Network which has recently partnered with AAUW.  Care is an organization works in nearly 70 countries making a difference in poor communities by improving education, expanding economic opportunities and increasing access to health care.
