No Programs in July--Enjoy your Summer
Monday, August 11, 2008
(5:30 - 7:00pm)
Click here for a draft poster to share. More news to come as we get closer to this event. This event is free and open to the public.
The program will start with a panel of four women who have different types
of local government involvement with Carol A. Reitan (former Mayor of Normal)
moderating.
The panel members are:
Bette Rackauskas (McLean County Board - elected position)
Karen Schmidt (Bloomington City Council - elected position)
Pam Reece (Assistant City Manager - employed by Town of Normal)
Evelyn Young (Chair, Normal Human Relations Commission - appointed position)
Each panel member is asked to respond to two questions:
1. What have your experiences been, as a woman, as you have participated in
local government? Or have you noticed nothing different as a woman than you
would have expected if you were a man doing the same thing?
2. What would you suggest that women do to become active in local government-in
employment, appointed positions, and/or elected posts?
After the presentations (8-10 minutes each), the moderator will open a conversation with all the attendees posing questions, and adding any experiences, ideas, or action suggestions.
The planning committee for this event is -- Diana Cristy & Carol Reitan (representing AAUWBN), and Gwen Pruyne & Gretchen Monti (representing the League of Women Voters) -- have prepared a modest research project to determine how many women are presently involved in elected and appointed positions in the County and the Twin Cities' governments. You may be surprised by the findings!!

Earl and Carol Reitan have lived in their current home for the past 26 years. The house was built during the last energy crisis! She also talked about many other "GREEN" house issues. For the fifteen or so of us who attended, we learned a lot from Carol's talk and handouts! Carol also provided some yummy treats. Thanks Carol!

She is a professional social psychologist and was one of the founders of Collaborative Solutions Institute (CSI), a professional practice for healing relationships and enhancing life. Friday, December 7, 2007--AAUW-BN Celebrated the Holiday Season with our Annual Potluck and Kickoff of the Year of Jane -- The location of this year's Holiday potluck was at Joan Edgren's home--she's a sorority house mother at IWU. Joan made her truly scrumptious beef stew for us courtesy of AAUW-BN. Thanks to everyone else who also pitched in and brought dessert and such for the meanl. Joan also graciously offered the sorority’s table service for our use in their dining room. Finally, the sorority house was decorated beautifully and lovingly for the holidays by Joan's sorority students.
As a special treat after dinner, AAUW-BN's Book Club Members--Judith Hanson, Diana Cristy, Gen Finley, and Christina Evans--gave a wonderful presentation sharing biographical of information about the amazing Jane Addams. AAUW-Illinois kicks off the "Year of Jane" in December and this is AAUW-BN's way of getting into that spirit. Through discussions among the members and guests, AAUW-BN hopes to partner with other local organizations in the Fall who might be hosting a "modern day" Jane Addams speaker.

Picnic and Annual Meeting.
We were at the lovely home of Dr. Beatrice Smith. It was great to reconnect with everyone and share a meal. Beatrice and Grace as co-Programming
VP's elect presented the draft of varied monthly programming activities planned for the coming year. There should be activities of interest to everyone at some point during the year. There are also several exciting opportunities where AAUW BN will partner with local groups in the Fall as well as the Spring in order to promote our national mission.
Of special note was the AAUW BN Book Club "All Branch Read-Out Project" in addition to their regular Book Club schedule. Judith Hansen and Book Club members selected three books for Branch Members to choose from to read for the January 2007 meeting where these books will be discussed. You can borrow one of the books from one of the local libraries to read it and then share your thoughts about it over dessert at Grace's home.
To help in our planning for the picnic (food, etc), please email Beatrice by the
evening of Aug. 14 if you are able to join us. We look forward to seeing you there!

Women's Economic Security" and

Springfield is a bonus, easy to get to. This will be a terrific opportunity
for new members to find out more about us and feel part of the great larger
organization we are here to support.
If you want to know more about the meeting and location and driving information,

to The Pantagraph's full article. Congratulations Martha!

Second Pres has been collecting supplies for the center. Certain supplies are suggested every month--this month is office supplies for the center (paper, pens, pencils, pads, phone message forms, staples, tape, letter sized folders, etc.). Other months we have collected over-the-couner medications, personal care supplies, laundry detergent, back packs, paper plates, and styrofoam cups.
April 29 – 30, 2005 -- Illinois AAUW State Convention in Springfield (see www.aauw-il.org for more information)
Five Branch Members attended: Ellen Coverick, Gen Finley, Martha Everman, Ann Gill, and
Grace Johns. Martha received the AAUW Spirit Award. Grace received the Emerging
Star Award.
The panel discussion about education funding in Illinois was excellent. The Panelists were
Barbara Holt of the Chicago Urban League, Ralph Martire of the Educational Funding
Adivsory Board (EFAG), Martha Bowman of the Illinois Education Association, and State
Representative Dan Brady. They spoke about HB/SB 750 which proposes to redefine the
education funding formula in Illinois in order to more fully fund ($6500 per pupil rather than
$4500 per pupil) primary and secondary education to help economically disadvantaged
school districts--due to the over reliance on property tax as a means of funding education.
HB/SB 750 also proposes to lower income and property taxes as well as some business taxes
to achieve this. How, you ask? But taxing service sector revenue streams (which now represent
23% of revenue in Illinois) since sales tax revenue streams have dropped from around 23% to a
low of 8% of Illinois GDP. If you care about the sad state of education funding in Illinois--and
believe that all children have the potential to achieve if given access to modern educational
facilities and programs (school district per pupil costs ranged from $4500 to $18,000!)--then
become informed on this topic and let your representatives know your opinions. HB/SB750
won't pass without legislators realizing that doing their jobs (to support education in Illinois) won't
cost them votes in the next election.
Other sessions were lively and provided helpful branch and association development suggestions.
Over 250 women attended the two day convention. Some pictures will be posted once they're developed.
April 5, 2005 Branch Board Meeting (Tuesday, 7:00pm)
